About the Artist
Take one look at Scott Calpino’s artwork, and you’ll know that he’s no ordinary artist. As a young boy growing up in Laureldale, Pennsylvania, Scott always loved to draw. “I was always inspired by my grandfather’s artistic talent.” While wildlife was not usually the subject matter, Scott always had an appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Animals and nature scenes began to emerge in Scott’s sketchbook as he became very involved in the Boy Scout program. He loved to spend as much time as possible outdoors, hunting and fishing. In 1982, Scott graduated from Kutztown State College, known today as Kutztown University, with a bachelor’s degree in fine art. “Whenever I needed to relax and unwind from my studies, I would make the short trip to Lake Ontelaunee to watch deer or photograph waterfowl.”
One of Scott’s goals was to become an artist for Pennsylvania Game News, as he had always been inspired by the artwork of Ned Smith. He has been contracted as a contributing artist for the magazine since 1988. Since then, Scott’s work has been featured in numerous publications and has been showcased in many regional art competitions. Scott is a 6-time winner of the Pennsylvania Duck Stamp competition. He has also won other state competitions in Oklahoma, Maryland and most recently, Michigan. He has been a long-time supporter of Ducks Unlimited and NDA. He regularly donates to other conservation organizations, believing that he must give back to the environment which inspires him. His works can been found in private collections nationwide. “I’ve always believed that there are no shortcuts in life, and that you have to work hard to achieve your goals.” This ideal is evident in every carefully placed hair or feather on the creatures that Scott depicts, which leads many viewers to describe Scott’s works as photorealistic. To Scott, the ultimate compliment need not come in words, but rather expressed with a beaming smile or a reminiscent tear. “That says it all, and it’s the greatest feeling in the world!”
Scott and his wife, Lori, live in Bernville, Pennsylvania. Their property, bordering state game lands, bursts year-round with all forms of wildlife, which serves as a great inspiration for Scott’s works.
